  • SASSA publishes the same income and asset limits for the War Veteran's Grant as for the Older Person's Grant (R9 350 / R1 584 000), but the Annexure A formula with the R2 420 war veteran's amount would give slightly higher limits. We show SASSA's published figures; confirm with SASSA for war veterans.
  • Annexure A does not say how SASSA rounds a sliding-scale grant. Our estimate rounds down to the nearest rand.

Not SASSA. General information, not advice. KayaGrant is an independent website. It is not SASSA and is not affiliated with SASSA, the Department of Social Development or any government body. We summarise official information from SASSA, the Government Gazette, the Social Assistance Act and its regulations, and the Department of Social Development. It is general information, not legal or financial advice, and the means test result is an estimate: only SASSA can decide whether you qualify and how much you are paid. Always confirm with SASSA on 0800 60 10 11, at a SASSA office or on sassa.gov.za. The checker uses SASSA's published limits and the formula in the regulations. SASSA's own assessment uses your documents and may differ.

What counts as income

Salary or wages, business or farm profits, payments from a trust or an inheritance, pensions and annuities, rent you receive, interest and dividends, maintenance, and financial support from organisations (regulation 21). SASSA lets you deduct income tax, UIF, medical scheme fees and obligatory pension or retirement annuity contributions (or up to 22% of net income if you have no obligatory fund). Social grants are not counted.

What counts as an asset

Cash and bank balances, investments, shares, matured endowment policies, money invested to buy an annuity, and property you own but do not live in (at municipal value, less the bond). The home you live in does not count. Assets given away or sold cheaply to qualify are still counted for five years.

How the sliding scale works

For older person's, disability and war veteran's grants, the yearly grant is 1.6 × the maximum yearly grant − 0.4 × your yearly income, but never more than the maximum. With the R2 400 grant, income up to R3 600 a month still gets the full amount, and the grant falls to the R100 minimum at R9 350. For a married couple, SASSA uses half of your combined income.

Frequently asked questions

What is the SASSA means test?

A check of your income and, for some grants, your assets, to see whether you can support yourself. Each grant has its own limits, set by the regulations under the Social Assistance Act and published by SASSA.

What is the income limit for the old age grant?

R9 350 a month (R112 200 a year) if you are single, or R18 700 a month combined for a married couple. The asset limit is R1 584 000 single or R3 168 000 married.

What is the income limit for the Child Support Grant?

Below R5 800 a month if you are single, or R11 600 a month combined if you are married. There is no asset test.

Does my house count as an asset?

No. The home you live in is not counted. Property you own but do not live in counts at its municipal value, less any bond.

Why is my estimate less than the full grant?

The older person's, disability and war veteran's grants use a sliding scale from the regulations: the yearly grant is 1.6 times the maximum yearly grant minus 0.4 times your yearly income, capped at the maximum. Grants under R100 a month are not paid.

Do I need to enter my ID number?

No, and you should never enter your ID number on any website that is not SASSA's. This checker only needs rough income and asset figures, and they never leave your browser.
