The R370 SRD grant explained

The COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant pays R370 a month to people aged 18 to 59 who have no or very little income. It has been extended until 31 March 2027.

1 point we are still verifying
  • The 2026 amendment (GN R.7351, GG 54460) is published on gov.za only as a scanned image. We confirmed R370 a month and the extension to 31 March 2027 from LawLibrary's record of that notice and SASSA's April 2026 leaflet; re-check against a text copy when one is available.

Who qualifies

  • Aged 18 to 59 and living in South Africa.
  • A South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee; a holder of a special permit under the Angolan, Lesotho or Zimbabwe exemption dispensations; or an asylum seeker with a valid Section 22 permit.
  • Registered on the Home Affairs database, or on SASSA's database if you do not have an ID.
  • Income or financial support of no more than R624 a month. SASSA checks bank accounts and government databases; if you have more than one account, each is checked against the limit.
  • Not getting another social grant for yourself, not living in a state-funded institution, and not unreasonably refusing a job or study offer.

How to apply

Online only, on srd.sassa.gov.za. SASSA verifies applicants with facial recognition. Applications received before the 15th of a month must be decided before the end of that month (SRD regulations, reg 3(3)).

Status and payment

Your status for each month shows on srd.sassa.gov.za. If you are approved, the payment date for that month shows there too: SRD payments are not part of the monthly grant schedule. Keep your bank details and cellphone number up to date with SASSA. If SASSA cannot pay you and cannot reach you within 90 days, your approved application may be suspended, and after another 90 days cancelled.

Appeals

If you are declined, you can appeal online on srd.dsd.gov.za within 90 days of the decision. The Independent Tribunal must decide within 90 days. You cannot add evidence that was not part of your application, so make sure your details are right when you apply. See appeals.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my SRD declined for one month but approved for another?

SASSA assesses you every month. If money above R624 came into any of your bank accounts, or a database shows income or another grant, you can be declined for that month even if you were approved before.

Does the SRD grant end in March 2027?

The current regulations fund the SRD until 31 March 2027. Whether it continues after that depends on a new government decision. We will update this page when one is published.

Can I get the SRD if I get a child support grant for my child?

Yes. The rule is that you cannot get the SRD together with a social grant for yourself. A Child Support Grant is paid for the child.

Someone on WhatsApp says they can fix my SRD status. Is it real?

No. Only SASSA can change your status, on srd.sassa.gov.za. Never give anyone your ID number, PIN or one-time code.
