Avoid grant scams
Scammers target grant beneficiaries with fake payment dates, fake status-check websites and people pretending to be SASSA officials. Here is how to protect your money.
SASSA will never ask for your PIN, and does not ask for your ID number or banking details on social media. If anyone does, it is a scam.
Warning signs
Someone asks for your PIN, one-time code, ID number or bank details by phone, SMS, WhatsApp or social media.
A website or person offers to "check your SRD status", "fix" a declined application or speed up a grant for a fee. Applying is free, and only SASSA can change your status.
A post announces payment dates or grant increases that do not appear on SASSA's official channels or in the official dates we list.
A link looks like SASSA's but is not on sassa.gov.za (for example a free blog, a short link or a different spelling).
A shop, loan provider or person wants to keep your card or ID as security. Your grant may not be ceded or pledged (Social Assistance Act s20).
These come from SASSA's 2026 "You and Your Grant" booklet. If in doubt, visit a SASSA office in person.
