Appeals: if SASSA says no
If SASSA declines, suspends or stops your grant and you disagree, you can appeal to the Independent Tribunal within 90 days. Here is how, based on section 18 of the Social Assistance Act and SASSA's 2026 booklet.
1 point we are still verifying
The 2026 amendment (GN R.7351, GG 54460) is published on gov.za only as a scanned image. We confirmed R370 a month and the extension to 31 March 2027 from LawLibrary's record of that notice and SASSA's April 2026 leaflet; re-check against a text copy when one is available.
General information, not legal advice. KayaGrant is not SASSA or the Tribunal. For help with an appeal, ask a SASSA official, an advice office or a legal aid organisation.
1. Get the reasons in writing
When SASSA turns down an application it must tell you in writing that you do not qualify, why, and how to appeal (Social Assistance Act s14(3)(b)). Keep this letter or SMS. It shows the date of the decision, which starts the 90-day clock.
2. Appeal within 90 days
Under section 18(2), you, or someone acting for you, may lodge a written appeal with the Independent Tribunal within 90 days of the decision. Say why the decision is wrong and what you want the Tribunal to do (s18(3)).
Normal grants (older persons, disability, child support, foster, care dependency, war veterans, grant-in-aid): email [email protected], or ask a SASSA official to help you lodge it.
SRD grant (R370): online only on srd.dsd.gov.za, within 90 days. The Tribunal must decide within 90 days and may not consider new evidence.
3. What the Tribunal does
The Tribunal asks SASSA for its reasons and records, then confirms, changes or sets aside SASSA's decision, or makes any other decision that is just (s18(4) to (6)).
Missed the deadline?
The Tribunal may condone a late appeal (s18(7)). Lodge it anyway and explain why it is late. You can also apply again if your circumstances have changed, for example if your income dropped.
Before appealing a means test decision, check your figures with our means test checker.
