How to apply for a SASSA grant
Where to apply, which documents to bring, what the means test checks and what happens after you apply, based on SASSA's 2026 "You and Your Grant" booklet and the regulations.
KayaGrant is not SASSA and cannot take applications. Apply only at a SASSA office or on SASSA's own websites. This is general information, not legal advice.
1. Check which grant fits
Each grant has its own rules: see older persons, disability, child support, foster child, care dependency, war veterans, grant-in-aid and the SRD grant. Use the means test checker for a rough idea before you go.
2. Gather your documents
SASSA's booklet lists these for most grants (each grant page has its own list):
- A certified copy of your 13-digit barcoded ID, and your spouse's if you are married. If you do not have one, SASSA accepts approved alternative identification. Refugees bring a valid Section 24 permit.
- Proof of marital status: a marriage certificate, your spouse's death certificate, a divorce order, or an affidavit if your spouse deserted you.
- Three months' bank statements for all active accounts (yours and your spouse's), and your latest payslip if you work.
- A bank confirmation letter or recent statement for the account in your name that the grant must be paid into.
- Proof of deductions (tax, UIF, medical aid, pension) and of assets (property you do not live in, investments, shares, policies).
- For children: the child's 13-digit birth certificate. For disability grants: a referral letter with clinical information from your doctor or clinic. For foster care: the court order.
3. Apply
Go to your nearest SASSA local office, or apply online on services.sassa.gov.za. A SASSA official checks your documents and does the means test. For disability and care dependency grants, SASSA arranges a medical assessment.
4. Get your outcome
If SASSA cannot give you an answer on the day, follow up at the office, on the toll-free line 0800 60 10 11, or by email to [email protected]. If your application is turned down, SASSA must tell you in writing why, and about your right to appeal (Social Assistance Act s14(3)). See appeals.
5. After approval
Your grant is paid from the date of application. Tell SASSA about any change in your income, marital status, address, cellphone number or care arrangements, and go to reviews when asked. See reviews and missing payments.
Frequently asked questions
Does it cost money to apply for a SASSA grant?
No. Applying is free. Never pay anyone to apply for you or to "speed up" an application.
Can I apply online?
Yes, for many grants on services.sassa.gov.za, or at any SASSA local office. The SRD grant is online only, on srd.sassa.gov.za.
From when is my grant paid?
If approved, from the date of application: the day all the required documents are handed in and checked by a SASSA official (regulation 14). For a Foster Child Grant it is the date of the court order.
What if I do not have an ID?
SASSA accepts alternative identification for applicants without a 13-digit ID. Ask at a SASSA office, and apply for an ID at Home Affairs at the same time.
Someone else must collect my grant. Is that allowed?
Yes. You can appoint a procurator with a power of attorney at a SASSA office. If you cannot manage your grant, SASSA can appoint an administrator.
